Confirmation is, after baptism and the First Communion, the third sacrament of initiation in the Catholic Church. Confirmation is meant to empower the young adult Christians to take life into their own hands and get themselves involved in the world in the spirit of Jesus. Through the symbolic act of laying hands on the confirmands by the celebrant (most often a bishop), we believe that the Holy Spirit descends upon the confirmands and gives them the power and strength they need for their adult life. In this sense, Confirmation is a celebration of the coming of age in which the capacity of young adults to make mature decisions plays a very pivotal role. It is hence celebrated in the canton of Zurich mostly by youngsters aged between 16 and 18. In a preparatory confirmation course, the young men and women grapple with the central questions of life and faith.
